Middle School Social Emotional Support
The school counseling department offers social emotional support and learning opportunities for all students. This can look different for each student. All Plainwell middle school students will receive class lessons on topics like depression/suicide prevention, bullying/conflict resolution, and online safety. Additionally the counseling department also periodically offers small group meetings on topics like grief/loss, anxiety, and other topics as requested by the student body. Finally, school counselors are available to meet with students 1 on 1 as needed to address and support individual concerns and needs.
In the case of chronic, longer term mental health concerns your school counselor is able to provide referrals to appropriate community resources for you and your student. School counselors will work in collaboration with community resources, but are not a substitute for appropriate community resources when long term mental health support is needed.
Social Emotional Screener
Twice each school year the school counseling department encourages students to complete a social emotional screener. This tool allows students to share current social/emotional concerns and needs with school counseling department staff. Feedback from this screener is used to intervene and offer appropriate support to specific students, and target counseling department offerings to fit the needs of the student body. The form is available for review any time via request and is also posted for review prior to offering it to students. Student specific data is available only to specific counseling department staff to ensure student data confidentiality.
