Students in Mrs. Miller’s 2nd grade class at Starr Elementary had some fun during their March Reading Madness! 🏀 Throughout the month, they had a special reading project and it was a slam dunk. Each student in the class selected one of the basketball teams to research. They located the city/state to compare where it was in relation to Plainwell, they graphed the different types of mascots and designed jerseys for their team. The Final Four teams are pictured with their “jerseys”. What a fun project for reading month - you are all MVPs!

Earlier this week, students from the PHS Holocaust Literature I class toured the Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills. During the visit, they had a guided tour focusing on the process of genocide, the individual lives of the victims, the dangers of indifference and the importance of being an upstander, not a bystander when we encounter hate in our own lives. Students heard from a second-generation speaker who shared about her father’s life as a child who dealt with antisemitism even before the war, life in the ghettos, the journey in cattle cars, life in Auschwitz and other camps, medical experimentations, the death marches and how he made a choice to escape one day before his group of thousands of prisoners were executed. It was a moving learning experience for our students.

The Rock Starrs at Starr Elementary had many special readers this week. A couple highlights include: -In Mrs. Mudget’s Kindergarten class, Mr. Joshua Amaezechi read A is for Africa. Their class just started a unit on cultures around the world, so the students were able to learn about the country he grew up in - Nigeria! It was an awesome way to celebrate reading month and learn about different cultures from people who live in our community! -In Mrs. Heise’s third grade class, Officer Danielle, the police captain and firefighter for Kalamazoo Public Safety, read to the students. She shared two stories, answered questions and provided students with a donut treat and firefighter hat! What a great experience for our Rock Starrs - special thanks to Mr. Amaezechi and Officer Danielle! We appreciate all our special readers throughout the district who have supported reading month!
